In the rugged terrain of Montescheno, a tiny Piedmontese community of just 366 residents in the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola province, extreme alpine viticulture and high-altitude cheesemaking thrive. This dramatic topography directly shapes Valli Ossolane DOC, a characterful mountain wine produced in a restricted zone of only 17 municipalities. The steep pastures also yield Ossolano DOP, an aromatic cheese forged from local raw milk. In total, this small alpine enclave participates in 17 protected denominations, proving that even the most vertical, sparsely populated valleys can generate deeply expressive, place-specific culinary treasures.
