In the tiny Biellese community of Dorzano, home to just over 500 residents, the Piedmontese Alpine foothills slope into clay-heavy lowlands. This specific geography, irrigated by cold mountain runoff, creates the unique microclimate required for Riso di Baraggia Biellese e Vercellese DOP, a specialized rice cultivation limited to only 28 municipalities. Concurrently, the area’s sunny hillsides produce the grapes for Canavese DOC wines. Despite its small size, Dorzano participates in 16 overlapping protected denominations, showcasing how this precise transitional terrain bridges the gap between mountain viticulture and lowland cereal crops.
