Recognised since 1973, the Verdicchio di Matelica DOC covers eight Marche municipalities, including Camerino and Fabriano. What distinguishes this denomination from other regional whites is its rigorous production spectrum; it mandates a minimum of 85% Verdicchio grapes for a dry wine with a characteristic pleasantly bitterish aftertaste and at least 11.5% alcohol. Furthermore, its unique Passito style requires a prolonged grape drying period lasting until March 30th of the following year to achieve a minimum 23% sugar content, while its Spumante version must be crafted within the provinces of Ancona and Macerata.
