Lessona
Wine · PDO · 1 municipality
Recognised since 1982, the Lessona DOC is uniquely restrictive, permitting only two red wine typologies—the base wine and the riserva—with no white or rosé styles allowed under the denomination. While vinification and aging may occur in designated neighbouring parts of Biella and Vercelli, grape cultivation is strictly confined to the single municipality of Lessona. This Nebbiolo-based wine must contain at least 85% Nebbiolo, blended with Vespolina or Uva Rara, and undergoes a minimum of 22 months of aging. Furthermore, growers who choose to declassify their fruit are strictly limited to the Coste della Sesia rosso or Coste della Sesia Nebbiolo designations.
