Fontanarossa di Cerda
Wine · PGI · 1 municipality
Established in 1999 in the Sicilian municipality of Cerda, the Fontanarossa di Cerda IGT represents a winegrowing heritage dating back to ancient Greek colonization near Himera, where archaeologists recovered historic wine amphorae. This appellation distinguishes itself from sibling IGTs through unusually rigid production rules: even its basic, non-varietal white, red, and rosato wines cannot use general authorized grapes. Instead, they must be crafted exclusively from a strict, closed list of eight specific varieties, including Inzolia, Catarratto, and Nero d'Avola. These wines, limited to a maximum yield of 17.0 tons per hectare, must reach a minimum alcohol level of 11.0% by volume.
