Contea di Sclafani
Wine · PDO · 14 municipalities
Established in 2004 across 14 Sicilian municipalities, including Alia and Caltavuturo, the Contea di Sclafani DOC represents a curious anomaly in Sicily's wine landscape: despite its official status, it currently counts zero verified producers. The appellation, which can also be labeled as Valledolmo-Contea di Sclafani following a 2019 regulatory update, prescribes distinct requirements for its wines. The base red wine must achieve a minimum alcohol content of 12.0% vol from a maximum yield of 10.0 tonnes per hectare. For its rare late-harvest vendemmia tardiva styles, the rules strictly dictate a harvest no earlier than October 1st and mandatory aging in wood casks of 500 liters or less.
