Casauria
Wine · PDO · 18 municipalities
Established as an independent DOCG in late 2025, Casauria elevates a historic sub-zone of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo into its own strict territory. Centred in the Pescara province, including Castiglione a Casauria, this designation distinguishes itself from neighbouring Abruzzo appellations by completely banning must enrichment. Vinified from at least 90% Montepulciano grapes, the wine mandates a low maximum yield of 9.0 tonnes per hectare. While sibling wines often mandate barrel maturation, Casauria requires 18 months of total ageing starting November 1st of the harvest year but leaves wood contact entirely optional, focusing instead on preserving a naturally intense, spiced red-fruit profile.
